Last October, Rockstar Games released a trailer for Grand Theft Auto V, the latest offering in the developer's massively popular franchise. And then, nothing. For months, Rockstar has refused to release any more detail about the new game. On Thursday, however, Rockstar finally threw fans a bone by releasing two screenshots from the game. Check them out below.

While the two new shots aren't exactly action-packed, they do reveal a couple of things about the much-anticipated game. For starters, they give a sense of scope.

Grand Theft Auto V is set in the fictional city of San Andreas, an analogue of Los Angeles much in the same way Liberty City resembles New York. The last GTA game set in the city, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas focused more on the sprawl surrounding Los Angeles than the bustling downtown center.

One of the shots shows a helicopter flying through the downtown area, which looks much more detailed and fully realized than the comparatively small downtown area of San Andreas. Rockstar has called Grand Theft Auto V our biggest open world game yet, and these shots show it might just be true.

Secondly, these pictures show that the game is going to be beautiful. The screenshots are well-rendered, offering realistic views of the LA-analogue. If the whole game looks like this, gamers are in for a treat.

While Rockstar is known for giving pit few details about their upcoming games, it does have a couple of things to say about the recently released images. We are very busy working on the game! Everything is going well, but the game is a huge project. We should have more information and some new assets for you soon, they posted on an official Q&A session.

Rockstar went on to apologize for the lack of communication about the game, saying the previously released trailer was all they considered worthy of showing off.

We are sorry if you find this frustrating, but please understand, we don't do this because we 'don't care about our fans' 'don't respect our fans' 'hate GTA fans etc' - precisely the opposite! We do it because we want to make sure we only release 100 per cent correct information, and because we want to keep plenty back for the actual game release so there are still lots of surprises when you play it, Rockstar wrote.

Rockstar has not yet announced a release date for Grand Theft Auto V.
