KEY POINTS

  • Punch hole displays let you have full edge-to-edge displays
  • They maintain display continuity
  • They provide the user with more screen surface area
  • Punch Hole design is expected to be a trend for 2020

Ever since the advent of touchscreens, consumers have lusted after an all-over display, with no need for physical home buttons or ugly. While physical home buttons have already been phased out on most devices, notches still remained on top of many premium devices including the Apple iPhone 11 Pro.

However, the notch may finally be eliminated from flagships this year.

The solution to notches, which house not only the front camera but also the speakers along with sensors such as infrared and face recognition sensors is punch hole displays. In such displays, the selfie camera is placed in a similar manner to how a punching machine punches holes in paper.

A standalone selfie camera is placed at the left or in the middle part of the top of the display rather than being contained in the notch. This creates more screen surface area for the user and also makes the screen look continuous, making gaming and viewing videos much easier.

The punch hole display trend was started by Huawei in its Honor 20 series released last year, with Samsung following suit with its Note 10 and S11 flagship devices. While the Honor 20 had a punch-hole selfie camera at the left side of the display. Samsung placed its camera at a more practical middle of the display.

The year 2020, though is expected to have more such devices being launched, which include:

Google Pixel 4A: The Google Pixel 2019 series gained a lot of acclaim for its camera with night-mode capabilities. It however also got a lot of brickbats for its design – despite being an ultra-high-end device, it persisted with a large notch.

The 2020 iteration of the device is expected to see a difference – the Pixel 4A is expected to have a punch-hole display similar to the Honor 20. The new device is expected to be a mid-ranger with a continuous display with a punch-hole selfie camera on the left side.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite: The mid-range S-series device is expected to sport a punch-hole display camera in the front and a triple camera at the back.

OnePlus 8 Lite: The mid-range device is expected to be launched alongside the OnePlus 2020 flagship and is expected to sport a 16-megapixel front camera.

Sony Xperia 3: Sony has been trying to reinvent itself for long. It is expected to sport a punch-hole camera in the front.

Samsung Galaxy S11: The device is expected to sport a punch-hole front camera similar to its predecessor.
