  • Johnny Depp's $50 million defamation case against Amber Heard will push through
  • Amber Heard's request to have the case against her dismissed was overruled
  • Amber Heard and Johnny Depp will see each other in court in August

Amber Heard’s request to have Johnny Depp’s $50 million defamation case against her dismissed was overruled this week.

According to Deadline, Heard and Depp are expected to cross paths during the upcoming trial in August after the “Pirates of the Caribbean” filed a case against his ex-wife last year. In the court documents, the actor stressed his stand that Heard is not a victim of domestic abuse. Rather, the “Aquaman” star is the perpetrator.

Heard’s lawyers Kaplan Hecker and Fink LLP released a statement after the court denied the actress’ request.

“Today’s decision leaves it to a jury to decide the meaning of Ms. Heard’s op-ed and the truth of what she said. As we have said, the courts have strong mechanisms in place for determining the truth. Here, we remain confident that Ms. Heard will prevail at trial when the jury is presented with evidence on the question that the Court identified – namely, whether ‘Ms. Heard was abused by Mr. Depp,’” they said.

Depp’s lawyer, Adam Waldman responded to Heard’s team’s statement saying that the truth will eventually prevail.

“Today’s Court ruling speaks for itself. Roberta Kaplan’s suggestion that losing their own motion to dismiss was what they had planned all along also speaks for itself. As for Amber Heard’s mythical ‘evidence’ that Ms. Kaplan confidently cites, we and reality both look forward to seeing it,” Waldman said.

In her op-ed piece for the Washington Post, Heard talked about what it was like being a victim of domestic abuse. Even though the actress never mentioned Depp’s name, the actor’s lawyers said that it was evident he was the one being discussed by Heard. As such, the op-ed piece tarnished Depp’s name and also resulted in his removal from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.

Last week, Depp and Heard were scheduled to meet in court in London but their trial was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.
