The U.S. Department of State has warned U.S. citizens traveling and residing abroad to the enhanced potential for anti-American violence given recent counter-terrorism activity in Pakistan, in which Osama bin Laden was killed.

U.S. citizens in areas where recent events could cause anti-American violence are strongly urged to limit their travel outside of their homes and hotels and avoid mass gatherings and demonstrations, it said in a statement.

This Travel Alert expires August 1, 2011, it said.

Osama bin Laden, the Al-Qaeda leader and master mind behind 9/11 terrorist attack on America, was killed in a firefight with U.S. forces in Pakistan and his body was recovered, President Barack Obama announced late night on Sunday.

Obama announced live on television the death of Osama bin Laden, from the East Room of the White House in Washington.

He was killed in a mansion just outside Abbottabad, near Islamabad in north-west Pakistan .
