Vice president Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden visited the World Trade Center at Ground Zero on Friday marking the eighth anniversary commemoration of the 9/11 attacks.

The vice president laid flowers in a reflecting pool at ground zero before the rainy day ceremony after arriving at New York City's west side.

Biden read the poem titled Wild Geese written by American poet Mary Oliver who is author of more than a dozen books of poetry and prose.

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting--
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

Following the ceremony, Biden and his wife joined some family members of victims to lay flowers in one of the reflecting pools of the memorials.

The plaza was filled with family members holding photos of loved ones killed in the September 11 attacks.

President Obama speaking from the Pentagon said, No words can ease the ache of your hearts, as he spoke to a crowd of relatives and friends.
