Brush Fire Shuts Down Interstate 15 [VIDEO]
A fast-moving brush fire along Cajon Pass has consumed about 500 acres, damaged one home and closed down Interstate 15, officials said on Friday.
Authorities were calling for evacuation of several San Bernardino County, Calif. neighborhoods close to the blaze.
U.S. Forest Service spokesman John Miller told the Daily Press that the fire started along the freeway center divider and jumped into the San Bernardino National Forest. The blaze grew to 250 acres in a little more than an hour as high winds sent flames swallowing up the dry brush.
The size of the wildfire doubled by around 2:40 p.m., San Bernardino National Forest spokeswoman Carol Underhill said.
Underhill said mandatory evacuations were in effect for residents in the triangular area south of Mesquite Road, east of Baldy Mesa Road and west of Interstate 15. An evacuation center has been set up at the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds on Seventh Street in Victorville.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department has also called for evacuations in the Oak Hills area on Elk Ridge/Oak Hills Road.
Structures are being threatened, Bob Poole, spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service, told the Los Angeles Times.
There were two helicopters dropping retardant on homes, the Daily Press reported. A reported 10 engines, 15 aircraft and a bulldozer were fighting the blaze, as firefighters fought to protect ranch homes in Oak Hills.
