iPhone 4S Sold Out at Online Store in One Day; People Head to Apple Stores
If you were dreaming of getting your hands on the new Apple iPhone 4S on its launch date, then there is sad news for you today.
Apple Inc.'s preorder stock of the new mobile device for delivery on its release date has been sold out, at least on the company's Web site. Apple's site, which began accepting preorders Friday, had earlier said Oct. 14 would be the shipping date. But now the company's site says of the new smartphone, Ships: 1-2 weeks.
Despite the disappointment that Apple did not launch iPhone 5 during its Let's Talk iPhone event last week, the iPhone 4S has received a tremendous response from consumers.
AT&T, one of the three major U.S. carriers for iPhone 4S, received over 200,000 preorders in just 12 hours. AT&T said the iPhone 4S release was the most successful launch of any iPhone by the mobile carrier.
The number of iPhone 4S units available for preordering has not been revealed by Apple.
Meanwhile, a Mashable report said Apple fans who want the new iPhone 4S in their hands on the first day have started camping outside Apple Stores.
There are already three people queuing for an iPhone 4S at the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue in New York, according to the report. Two of them have been waiting for a total of 12 days.
The huge demand was not seen by only Apple and AT&T: The other two announced carriers supporting the iPhone 4S, Verizon Wireless and Sprint, also have had many customers preordering the new smartphone.
Our systems were humming very strongly since 3 a.m., [and executives were] pleased with the sales and the ordering process, The Wall Street Journal quoted a Verizon Wireless representative as saying.
However, neither Verizon Wireless nor Sprint have released preorder figures at this point.
The new iPhone with its cool camera and powerful microprocessor is supposed to break old sales records for Apple devices. The company holds a record of selling 1.7 million iPhones in three days in June of last year.
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster estimated Apple would sell 25 million handsets in the current quarter, the Journal reported.
