Joe Amendola: Sandusky Lawyer Impregnated Teenage Girl: Report

Joe Amendola, the lawyer for accused child molester and former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky, impregnated an underage teenage girl and later married her, according to a new report.

Amendola, who is currently serving as the defense attorney in the sexual molestation case looming over Sandusky during his time spent as coach for the Penn State football program, also served as a lawyer for a 16-year-old girl during the emancipation from her parents in 1996.

According to a report from online news source The Daily, which obtained documents filed with Centre County Courthouse, Amendola defended Mary Iavasile when she filed an emancipation petition on Sept. 3, 1996, right before she turned 17-years-old.

The girl's mother, Janet Iavasile, told The Daily that her daughter became pregnant with Amendola's child during the proceedings, giving birth to the child shortly before her 18th birthday. At the time, Amendola was about 49-years-old.

At the time, I didn't know the extent of the relationship, Janet Iavasile told The Daily. She met him through the school district; she was interested in the law, describing Amendola as her daughter's mentor.

According to records, the age of consent in Pennsylvania, where the case took place, is 16.

Amendola and Iavasile reportedly married on Feb 8, 2003 but since have divorced. The pair had two children together and she kept his surname.

Amendola speaks out on Anderson 360

However, when Amendola made his first media appearance on Monday since the Sandusky scandal broke out, Amendola claimed Sandusky's innocence in all of the 40 charges of sexual abuse to minors, insisting his client was misunderstood.

Jerry did get showers with kids, Amendola said on Anderson Cooper 360,admitting it was just horseplay as jocks always shower after you work out.

Amendola's interview aired simultaneously as Sandusky appeared on NBC's Rock Center, where he told Bob Costas he was not guilty, thought he did engage in inappropriate behavior with young boys.

I didn't go around seeking out every young person for sexual needs that I've helped, Sandusky said on Rock Center. There are many that I didn't have - I hardly had any contact with who I helped in many, many ways.

Following police investigations in 1998 after a boy told his principal he was being molested, though not harmed, Amendola said, The kid was having a good time.

On Anderson Cooper 360, Amendola said victims' testimony in the grand jury was doubtful, as Sandusky was innocent, as all 40 charges of sexual abuse were unsubstantiated by the facts of the case. Amendola went as far as saying he would trust Sandusky with his children, which did not sit well with his former wife Mary, now 32.

The Daily reported that Mary Amendola, who changed her name on Sunday on Facebook to Mary Christmas for privacy, posted some feedback about her former husband and his defense for Sandusky.

OMG did Joe just say that he would allow my kids to be alone with Jerry Sandusky? she wrote.

A history of defending sexual crime cases

It appears that Jerry Sandusky is not the only client accused of a sexual crime that Amendola has represented.

According to a report from the New York Daily News, in 2007, Joe Amendola served as the attorney for then Penn State tailback Austin Scott, who was accused of raping another student at PSU. However, the case was dropped by Centre County prosecutors when a judge notified the jury the female victim had accused another man of rape four years prior before he was acquitted.
