Denver quarterback Tim Tebow has received a great deal of media attention this season -- even from comedian Bill Maher. Reuters

Comedian Bill Maher has never been one to support religion, so it's no surprise that he has an opinion about Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow, who has made his Christian faith visible on the field with a pose described as tebowing.

After being named the starter after five games, Tebow had a stretch of games where he helped lead Denver to seven wins in eight games. Some experts and fans were vocal that Tebow deserved credit for the Broncos' rebound after starting the season with a 1-4 record, while others remained skeptical that he was not quite as responsible for the team's success as it seemed.

Since the 7-1 stretch, the Broncos have lost their last two games, and their last loss on Christmas Eve was particularly poor.

Following the Denver's 40-14 defeat to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday, Maher went on Twitter with a message that has stirred some controversy.

Maher posted: Wow, Jesus just fucked #TimTebow bad! And on Xmas Eve! Somewhere in hell Satan is tebowing, saying to Hitler 'Hey, Buffalo's killing them'.

The HBO host has come under fire from conservatives and Christians for his tweet. Some have gone as far as to prompt a boycott of the premium cable network.

Criticism for his stance on religion is nothing new for Maher, who made Religulous, a documentary that challenged world religions. It also is not new for comics to be critical of Tebow's open display of Christianity.

A recent Saturday Night Live sketch had Jesus appear in the Broncos' locker room and address tebowing. The sketch was likewise lambasted by several Christian activists.

Prior to Maher's aforementioned comment on Twitter, he had another posting about Tebow and religion prior to the Broncos' 41-23 loss to the New England Patriots on Dec. 18.

Maher posted: If Tebow beats Tom Brady tomorrow, I will tweet 'Jesus is king'. No pressure, Tom
