Louvre Retains Position as World's Most-Visited Art Museum

Paris-based Louvre Museum has reinstated its position as the most-visited art museum in the world with a record 8.8 million visitors last year.

The Louvre houses some of the most renowned works of art and antiquities, including Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, Caravaggio's The Fortune Teller and Titian's Le Concert Champetre among others.

For the last three years in a row, the museum with its iconic collections had around 8.5 million visitors. The more recent five percent increase in visitors have been attributed to a strong return of American visitors.

Apart from this, the museum has mentioned that there are also increasing number of visitors from emerging nations. As a whole, following the U.S., the maximum number of visitors has been from Brazil, Italy, Australia and China.

We are glad to note the revived interest in our museum on the part of Americans, as well as an increase in the number of tourists from developing countries, a statement by Louvre official reads.

The survey conducted by London-based The Art Newspaper has also revealed that after the Louvre, the British Museum is the second most-visited museum with a total of 5.8 million visitors closely followed by New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art with 5.2 million visitors.
