Nokia Lumia 900 – How Much Smarter than the Lumia 800?

The Nokia Lumia 900, which was launched at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) on Monday, is the first of Nokia's Windows Phone-based range to feature high-speed LTE connectivity. The phone, which is expected to be an upgrade of Lumia 800 has been described as iconic, beautiful and fast by the President of Nokia in North America.

Nokia's third Lumia smartphone sports head-turning design and promises to provide improved social and Internet experience to its users.

The latest Lumia packs a bigger screen and a better battery than the Lumia 800 and includes a front-facing camera (a feature missing in the previous model). Nevertheless, the Lumia 800 already has a fairly staunch fan-following.

The question, then, is what will happen when the two Lumia models go head-to-head...

Display: The Nokia Lumia 900 sports a bigger screen. It has a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 pixels Super AMOLED Plus capacitive ClearBlack touch-screen with 252 ppi density, compared to the Lumia 800, which has a 3.7-inch screen sporting the same 800 x 480 pixels Super AMOLED Plus capacitive ClearBlack touch-screen, with 217 ppi density. The Corning Gorilla Glass, which was used in the Lumia 800, has been used in the Lumia 900 too.

Size: The Nokia Lumia 900 comes with dimensions of 127.8 x 68.5 x 11.5 mm and weighs 160g, while the previous Lumia measures 116.5 x 61.2 x 12.1 mm and weighs 142g.

Processor: Both the Lumia 800 and the 900 come with a 1.4GHz Scorpion processor, an Adreno 205 GPU and feature 16GB of internal storage and 512MB of RAM. The Lumia 900 comes with the latest Qualcomm APQ8055 Snapdragon chipset.

Camera: Both Nokia Lumias sport a rear-facing 8 megapixel 3264x2448 pixels unit dual-LED flash camera with 720p video capture capabilities. The Lumia 800 does not have a secondary camera for video calling, whereas a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera for video calling has been included in the Lumia 900. Nokia has used Carl Zeiss optics for both Lumia cameras.

3G/4G: The Nokia Lumia 900 3G comes with HSPA+ support that translates into download speeds of 21 Mbps and upload speeds of 5.76 Mbps. Unlike the Lumia 800, the newer phone supports 4G LTE connectivity for AT&T. The 4G network will allow speeds of up to 50Mbps for downlink and 25Mbps for uplink. The Lumia 800 3G supports 14.4 Mbps download speeds and 5.76 Mbps upload.

Operating System: The Lumias run the latest Microsoft Windows Phone 7.5 Mango Operating Systems and offer one-touch access to social networking sites, along with features like easy grouping of contacts, communication threads and Internet Explorer 9.

WLAN/Bluetooth/USB: The Lumia 800 and Lumia 900 both have Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, NFC, Bluetooth 2.1 version with A2DP and EDR and microUSB 2.0 versions.

Battery: The Lumia 900 has an improved and longer-lasting standard Li-Ion 1830 mAh (BP-6EW) battery, compared to the Li-Ion 1450 mAh battery of the Lumia 800.

Other Features: Both phones boasts features like HTML5, Adobe Flash, an Accelerometer, gyro, proximity and a compass, as well as active noise cancellation with a dedicated mic, MP3/WAV/eAAC+/WMA player, MP4/H.264/H.263/WMV player, Xbox Live Hub, voice navigation and a document viewer/editor.
