'Downton Abbey' Season 3 Hits Twitter: Shirley MacLaine Tweets Updates From Set
Now that the second season of Downton Abbey is over, fans in the US and U.K. are clamoring for any news of what will come next for the Crawley family and their servants in season three of the PBS-Masterpiece classic, and newcomer Shirley MacLaine is doing her best to help viewers through the next six months.
Downton Abbey, whose season two finale drew record numbers for PBS with some 5.4 million viewers on Sunday, has become an unstoppable hit, more so than executive producer Gareth Neame, who had envisioned the show lasting only one season, could ever have imagined.
To tide viewers over, Neame has joined writer and creator Julian Fellowes and actress Elizabeth McGovern (Lady Cora) in giving out plenty of spoilers for season three, leaking a few plot points and teasing fans in a series of interviews leading up to and after the season two finale.
New guest star Shirley MacLaine, however, may go beyond interviews and simply begin tweeting Downton Abbey news for viewers.
Maclaine, who joins the cast as Cora's mother, American nouveau riche aristocrat Martha Levinson, has already begun tweeting from the set.
Everything is going well. We shot outside in wind and rain. Love the cast and crew, the 77-year-old Oscar winner posted on Twitter this week, adding: Off for wardrobe fittings for DA. Love costumes of period pictures. Wonder how big my bustle will be? :)
Amazing day on Downton Abbey set, she tweeted on Twitter. I love the British humor and temperament and functionality. Maggie [Smith, who plays the Dowager Countess] is so subtle and so much fun!
These Twitter posts don't tell fans anything new about season three, especially after the details Fellowes has let slip, MacLaine's early tweets seem to indicate that the actress may continue to post Twitter updates from the set throughout filming for Downton Abbey.
And considering how many cliffhangers the season two finale gave PBS-Masterpiece viewers (Will Bates stay in prison? Will Patrick Gordon come back? Will Matthew and Mary actually get married?), the smallest details from the England set are likely to become even more prized as the months go by.
