Gingrich Wrong: You Can Put a Gun Rack in a Chevy Volt

An Atlanta man has built a gun rack for his Chevy Volt in response to Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich's assertion that you can't put a gun rack in a Volt. John McDole built his Volt gun rack in about half an hour and displayed it in a Youtube video to demonstrate the versatility of the Volt.

I am a Republican, and I don't agree with everything the Republican Party puts out; sometimes it's borderline absurd, and that (Gingrich's statement) was one of those absurdities, McDole said in an interview.

Gingrich drew McDole's ire with a statement he made in a speech last month that You can't put a gun rack in a Volt -- so let's be clear what this election's all about: we believe in the right to bear arms and we like to bear the arms in our trucks.

Gingrich was attempting to make the case that the Volt was a product of the Obama administration, calling it an Obama car.

McDole's do-it-yourself gun rack and the accompanying video were meant to be a comment on the field as whole, and was directed at the Republican Party and what he termed as misinformation that was frequently cultivated by the Republican presidential contenders.

I don't know why pundits want to attack GM and the Volt, an American car that's made here, McDole said, adding that the car was developed during the Bush administration that that GM received TARP funds from the Bush administration. McDole feels that many within the party spend too much time attacking companies like GM instead of viewing the Volt as an innovative American product.

People should go test drive the Volt. There's a lot of misinformation out there, McDole said, adding that I love it [the Volt]. The thing's a space car.

At the time of publication, the Gingrich campaign was not available for comment. However, McDole said that he had heard that Gingrich wanted to meet him.

A GM spokesperson responded to Gingrich's assertion in a February blog post, saying that, Newt Gingrich has taken up saying that 'You can't put a gun rack on a Volt.' That's like saying 'You can't put training wheels on a Harley.' Actually, you can. But the real question is 'Why would you?'

1: It looks weird 2: It doesn't work very well, and 3: There are better places for gun racks and training wheels -- pickup trucks and little Schwinns, respectively. Seriously, when is the last time you saw a gun rack in ANY sedan?, the spokesperson further expounded.
