Jessica Dorrell: Police Say Female Passenger Rode With Bobby Petrino During Motorcycle Crash
After crashing his motorcycle about 20 miles outside Fayetteville, Ark., on Sunday, University of Arkansas football coach Bobby Petrino had his school and his family release reports that no other individuals were involved. But according to the police report released Thursday, Petrino did in fact have another rider with him: 25-year-old Jessica Dorrell.
Dorrell, a former volleyball player for the Arkansas Razorbacks, is now in charge of organizing the football team's recruiting, including assessing the initial eligibility of each incoming freshman. Petrino hired Dorrell on March 25, naming her the team's student-athlete development coordinator.
The official police report released Thursday said Petrino was traveling west on his motorcycle in the westbound lane ... with passenger Dorrell riding on the back when he suddenly, for an unknown reason, was unable to maneuver a turn and lost control of his vehicle, laying it down on the left side while sliding off the highway about 20 miles southwest of Fayetteville.
Dorrell said she had no idea what caused the accident. But in Sunday's statement from Petrino's family (via his school), there was no mention of Dorrell.
Coach Petrino was involved in a motorcycle accident on Sunday evening that involved no other individuals, it said. He is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. Our family appreciates respect for our privacy during the recovery and we are grateful for the thoughts of Razorback fans at this time. Jeff Long, director of athletics and vice chancellor, said he has been in touch with the Petrinos and added that he will consult with the family to provide additional information at a later time. Until then, there will be no further information or comment on the accident per the Petrinos' request.
The statement made no mention of Dorrell.
At Tuesday's press conference. Petrino was asked again point blank if he was alone. He replied, Yeah.
Petrino was asked if anyone helped him get up.
When I came out of a ditch, there was a lady there that had flagged down a car, Petrino replied. And the guy that was in the passenger seat said get in we'll just take you right to the hospital instead of waiting,' and so I got in the car and they headed toward Fayetteville. He did not mention the name of the woman, whether or not it was Dorrell.
Petrino, who is married with four children, said at Tuesday's presser that he spent Sunday afternoon with his wife at a lake and went for an evening ride.
Dorrell didn't immediately return a message from the AP seeking comment. University of Arkansas spokesman Zack Higbee refused to comment.
While Petrino's omission of facts could be seen as scandalous, if Dorrell was really uninjured on the scene, their meeting could have been either coincidental, or completely innocent. It's worth noting they only became co-workers about nine days ago.
The police report said Dorrell suffered no injuries from the accident; Petrino, on the other hand, suffered four broken ribs and a broken vertebra. He was not wearing a helmet; there was no mention if Dorrell had a helmet with her at all. Petrino said the wind and the sun caused the accident; Dorrell told police she didn't know what caused the crash.
