Hustler?s Larry Flynt Responds To Lewd S. E. Cupp Photo: ?That?s Satire?
Hustler's publisher, Larry Flynt, has responded to a lewd, digitally altered photograph of conservative commentator and New York Daily News columnist S.E. Cupp in his magazine.
The Blaze first reported Wednesday that a fake photo of S.E. Cupp, doctored to make it appear as if Cupp had a penis in her mouth, was published in the raunchy men's magazine. The photo appears next to the headline Celebrity Fantasy with the caption What Would S.E. Cupp Look Like With A D--- In Her Mouth?
Larry Flynt responded to The Blaze, saying: That's satire. I'm able to publish this because of the Supreme Court case I won in 1984, Flynt v. Falwell.
Flynt v. Falwell was a 1988 case wherein the U.S. Supreme Court decided that the First Amendment protects parodies of public figures as long as they cannot reasonably be perceived as legitimate. Hustler had published an article in 1983 claiming Rev. Jerry Falwell had engaged in a drunken sexual encounter with his mother. The case was decided 8-0.
A disclaimer underlining the illegitimacy of the photo of S.E. Cupp was included with the image, reading: No such picture of S.E. Cupp actually exists. This composite fantasy is altered from the original for our imagination, does not depict reality, and is not to be taken seriously for any purpose.
Other female conservative commentators have come out in defense of S.E. Cupp.
Michelle Malkin, blogger and FOX News contributor, has faced her fair share of criticism. On Wednesday, she reposted an article that she had written in 2008, titled The Four Stages of Conservative Female Abuse. These four stages include infantalization, sexualization, demonization and dehumanization.
We can't and needn't wait for NOW to weigh in. Conservative women are waging the counter-offensives against leftist degradation for themselves that no one else will wage, wrote Malkin. Whether it's Palin or Ann Romney or Nikki Haley or S.E. Cupp or a local grass-roots activist mom, right-wing sisters are pushing back. Which is prompting even more hateful scorn from Democrat officials like this. Call 'em out ladies. Call 'em out.
Naked D.C. blogger Emily Zanotti also threw some punches Hustler's way.
The only issues I've ever seen [of Hustler], and I speak as a subscriber to Playboy, so its not like I haven't seen porn in print before, look like they were published on the tail end of the 1970s, where everything was polyester and plastic and avocado green and all of the images (and the models) look like they were left out in the sun too long. It's weird. Like you wouldn't find it in some hip guys apartment. Like you'd find it in some aging creeper's bathroom behind Sears catalogs in a Formica magazine holder, wrote Zanotti, poking fun at the magazine first published by Larry Flynt in 1974.
Well, no. No one would make a photo like this of Nancy Pelosi or Michelle Obama in the first place. The problem with S.E. Cupp is, obviously, she's sexually attractive and has an opinion that differs from what I can only assume are the self-righteously liberal author's. And if there's anything we can agree on, its that Nancy Pelosi and Michelle Obama should never be viewed naked by anyone. Ever.
Zanotti said that she believes Flynt's motive was to shame S.E. Cupp into never speaking out on her conservative viewpoints again. It's a way to threaten her without threatening her, she said.
As for S.E. Cupp, the author responded to The Blaze on Wednesday, saying she was horrified and disgusted by the Hustler photo.
Cupp balked at the chance that any feminist organizations will come to her defense. The National Organization for Women, NOW, will not come out and say liberal women deserve more respect than conservative women and we are not going to defend conservative women. They're not going to admit to that but let me tell you that is exactly how they feel.
She believes that clearly by anyone's standards this is worse than Rush Limbaugh's having called Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke a slut, which resulted in national outrage.
The outrage of Sandra Fluke will not be matched on my side, Cupp told The Blaze. It seems that feminism has devolved into an institution that has picked losers and winners and has decided that some women qualify for respect and other women do not.
S.E. Cupp has received support on Twitter. Defenders used the hashtag #istandwithsecupp to champion on behalf of Cupp.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Very humbling. #istandwithsecupp, she tweeted on Wednesday in response.
