Lightning Strikes Empire State Building In New York City In Spectacular Photo

In a spectacular photo posted by one New Yorker on Facebook, a thick lightning bolt struck the antenna perfectly on the tip of the Empire State Building, one of the most famous skyscrapers in both New York and the world.

The photo, which appeared in the New York Daily News and is credited to Keith Olbermann via MobyPicture, appears to have been shared by Facebook user Kevin Clamato during the thunderstorm on Friday. One can see one thick lightning bolt striking the tip of the Empire State, which stands at 102 stories at 1,454 feet. The Empire State Building, the tallest building in New York City post-World Trade Center attacks, was not damaged.

Clamato's photo was shared just under 600 times at the end of the business day on Friday.

Earlier in the afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for New York City until surrounding areas until 9 p.m. ET. All boroughs including Manhattan, where there Empire State is located, were part of the warning as temperatures reached between 95 and 100 degrees in New York City.
