James Holmes Conspiracy Theory Surfaces, Supporters Suggest Aurora Police Have The Wrong Man [PHOTO]

A James Holmes conspiracy theory has risen in the weeks following the release of the alleged killer's mug shot.

Holmes, a 24-year-old former doctoral student at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora, was arrested in the parking lot of an Aurora, Colorado movie theater after police say he opened fire inside a screening of "The Dark Knight Rises." the shooting left 12 people dead and 58 others wounded.

But after a group of apparent James Holmes supporters crafted together a comparison photo, which places two different photos of the alleged gunman side-by-side, the internet is question whether Aurora P.D. has the right man.

Holmes's supporters, those likely to be responsible for a James Holmes Facebook fan page that has recently surfaced, are actually suggesting that the man who appeared in court photos with a dazed and confused look on his face and dyed red hair, is an imposter.

Advocates of the theory have obtained the student ID photo of Holmes which hit the web the day after the shooting and have placed that next to the mug shot of Holmes taken after he was detained.

They support the theory in an analysis of the pictures by an unnamed supporter, that the ears and noses are too dissimilar.

If the conspiracy theater did prove to be legitimate, it would seemingly come at an inconvenient time. Holmes is scheduled to appear Monday in court, where he will be formally charged with the crime.

He is also being held in connection with the ensuing discovery of active explosive material in his apartment, which investigators believe he rigged before leaving for the Century Aurora 16 multiplex, where the shootings took place.

Prosecutors will reportedly decide whether to seek the death penalty in the coming weeks.
