Chelsea Transfer Rumours: Modric, Moses, Maicon and Azpilicueta Involved in Latest Speculation
Chelsea got their Premier League season off to a winning start on Sunday, as new signing Eden Hazard grabbed the headlines in a 2-0 win over Wigan. Yet speculation persists that Roberto Di Matteo will still add to his squad before the close of the transfer window at the end of the month.
One man that the Blues could still move for was a key member of the opposition's ranks at the weekend. Winger Victor Moses has been pursued by Chelsea for much of the summer and an agreement may well be imminent. The Daily Telegraph claims that signing the 21-year-old has become Chelsea's priority, with Wigan ready to sell should they receive an offer of £9 million.
The Sun reports similar claims while also relaying quotes from a "Wigan insider" who states that Moses remains eager to test himself at Stamford Bridge.
Moses gave Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic some uncomfortable moments at the DW Stadium and it remains likely that Chelsea will attempt to bring in a more natural right back. Marseille's Cesar Azpilicueta has been mentioned as a Chelsea target for several weeks now, but a move could now be set for completion.
French publication L'Equipe reports that the Spaniard has played his last game for the Ligue 1 side, with a transfer to Chelsea potentially going through this week for between €8 million (£6.3m) and €10 million (£7.9m).
The 22-year-old was on duty for Spain in this summer's Olympic Games and has just begun his third season with Marseille after joining from Osasuna.
Before being linked to Azpilicueta, reports had emerged that Chelsea were in talks to sign Inter Milan's Maicon. That speculation has now been reignited with the Italian giants hinting that the Brazilian could soon be on the move.
"Maicon is the strongest right-back in the world," Inter coach Andrea Stramaccioni told Sky Sports Italia. "We all are fond of him, all at Inter love him.
"However, for some evaluations, affection does not count so much. Let's see what happens in the coming days."
While he could be available for a reasonable fee given that his contract expires next summer, at 31 he would break with the club's recent policy of trying to sign players who are nearer the beginning of their careers.
Maicon has also been linked strongly with moves to both Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.
An unlikely story has also appeared in the Spanish press in recent days resurfacing the link between Chelsea and Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric.
The Croatian was close to a move to Stamford Bridge last summer, with the Blues having three bids rejected by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.
Modric has been involved in another transfer saga this close season as has tried to force through a move to Real Madrid. According to Marca, however, Tottenham are set to offer Modric to Chelsea for €40 million in order to try and coerce Real into upping their offer.
Even if this speculation proves to be accurate, it would be a major surprise should Chelsea become a serious contender for the 26-year-old's signature.
