Dr. Oz: Green Coffee Bean Extract Helps Speed Weight Loss Up To 2 Pounds A Week
On the season premiere of "The Doctor Oz Show," Dr. Mehmet Oz said green coffee bean extract can help women lose weight.
Green coffee beans are simply coffee beans that have not yet been roasted. Coffee is typically made from roasted coffee beans because it taste better, but the process also eliminates chlorogenic acid, which speeds weight loss.
The Dr. Oz website states:
"Unfortunately, traditional brewed coffee doesn't serve as a good source of chlorogenic acid. While roasting green coffee beans removes its naturally bitter taste, it also removes a significant portion of chlorogenic acid. Hence, green coffee beans remain one of the best natural sources for chlorogenic acid."
The Examiner reported that according to a new study using the extract, participants lost an average of 17.5 pounds in 22 weeks. When Oz did his own study he found that dieting participants lost an average of two pounds per week when taking the extract while those who did not lost an average of only one pound a week.
Oz said he would not endorse any one product because he didn't want his name associated with it, but people should look for green coffee beans extract with at least 45 percent chlorogenic acid and the recommended dosage was 400 mg.
The tablet should be taken 30 minutes before each meal, Oz said.
When looking at the green coffee bean supplement ingredients, chlorogenic acid can be listed as GCA® (green coffee antioxidant) or Svetol.®
The celebrity doctor, who got his start on Oprah Winfrey's talk show, also made sure to note that if a green coffee bean extract product does not list any ingredients it should be avoided.
The extract should only be taken by adults who are 18 and older and not by women who are pregnant or breast feeding.
"The supplement is new, and there is no research on its effects on children; children should not take this supplement," the Dr. Oz website said.
