  • Oscar De La Hoya is close to deciding on a potential ring return
  • He has responded to Gennady Golovkin's threat
  • De La Hoya wants to prove he is still the best in boxing

Boxing-champion-turned-promoter Oscar De La Hoya is considering a ring return, but a final decision has yet to be made. The 47-year-old has admitted that Mike Tyson inspired him to seriously consider fighting again, with Gennady Golovkin ambitiously on his radar.

In the eyes of many, the “Golden Boy” may be pushing his luck too far. Golovkin is an active fighter and remains a deadly fighter in the ring. GGG already stated that he won’t go easy on De La Hoya if the fight were to happen, warning the Golden Boy Promotions CEO could seriously get hurt.

De La Hoya responded to those jabs and said that he understands why Triple G commented in a bad fashion. However, he warned that a potential showdown will not be a walk in the park for the Kazakhstani in the event it does happen.

“I mean c’mon, I’m not a walk in the park, like the guy he fought on the other day,” De La Hoya said.

“I’ve always prided myself on fighting the best,” he added. “That’s never going to change. I can’t go back on that.”

But before anything else, De La Hoya needs further convincing before making a decision. He revealed that he plans to consult Tyson about the idea.

“I’m thinking about it, yeah, absolutely. I do wanna talk to Mike Tyson about how he felt, just his philosophy on why he did it, how he did it — because he looked phenomenal. He looked great. For a guy who’s 54, 56 years old, he looked in amazing shape. Yes, his timing might’ve been off just a bit but he looked good," De La Hoya stated on Fight Hub TV.

De La Hoya went on to share that he is in shape and running daily. He is at 169-pounds right now but feels he can go down to 154 if needed.

Aside from hopefully replicating what Tyson has done, De La Hoya added that fighting again is to prove a point to himself and the younger generation. That includes wanting to be the best, regardless of how old you are.

“Hopefully it can spark something with these young guys. Instead of listening to the whispers in their ears instead of thinking about the business first. Think about the fight. Think about the glory. Think about the legacy. The only way to create a legacy is by fighting the very best,” De La Hoya said.
