A 20-year-old man pleaded guilty Monday for attempting to traffic drugs into Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre, Canada, by hiding them inside Kinder Surprise eggs, and then inserting them inside his rectum.

Damian O’Reilly was looking to make a profit by selling the drugs to the inmates in the prison at 10 times the market price, but his plan went awry and now faces a prison term.

He got caught red-handed for his innovative way of transporting the drugs inside the high security facility on June 19, 2016, local news outlet Ottawa Citizen reported.

Kinder Surprise, also known as Kinder Egg, is a world-famous treat for children. It is a hollow chocolate egg that contains a yellow oval-shaped container meant to be the “yolk.” The “surprise” is contained inside the “yolk” in form of a small toy that typically needs to be assembled by the kids before they can play with it.

Because of the convenient setup of Kinder Surprise, it is most popular ways of smuggling contraband into Canadian jails. The toy inside the “yolk” can easily be replaced by drugs that can be stuffed into the limited space.

Hence, the means of transporting the drugs into the prison came easily to O’Reilly and all that was left for him to figure out was a way to make it inside the Ottawa prison.

O’Reilly knew that he had to get himself arrested first, which was not that difficult since he was already on probation.

He deliberately threw a rock at a police cruiser parked outside a courthouse. He was arrested, held for bail and subsequently sent to be booked into the old Innes Road jail.

Though the plan had proceeded smoothly till then, it started to unravel when a prison guard got curious about why O’Reilly seemed to be in discomfort.

Following this suspicion, O’Reilly was escorted to a dry cell, a room which has no plumbing and guards will either attempt to seize the contraband or wait for it to be expelled. In this case, O’Reilly gave up the drugs voluntarily.

Eight eggs in total were confiscated by the guards, containing 59 grams of marijuana, one gram of MDMA, tobacco, rolling papers and matches.

O’Reilly pleaded guilty to drug trafficking and was sentenced to two years, less 250 days credited for pre-trial custody.

Since his arrest, O’Reilly has been trying to turn a new leaf, said his lawyer Paolo Giancaterino. “Damian has been working hard to turn his life around. He is a young man who is aiming to be a productive member of our community when he is released,” Giancaterino said.

This is not the first time that Kinder Eggs have been used in smugglings drugs into a prison. However, smuggling eight eggs in a single attempt does make the record of the highest eggs smuggled at a time. In 2010, another ambitious drug-smuggler tried to get past security with four eggs inside his rectum.
