Halloween may not be until Thursday, Oct. 31, but celebrities celebrated the spookiest day on the calendar early this year over the weekend.

The most controversial costume so far was worn by actress Julianne Hough, who dressed as “Crazy Eyes” from the Netflix series “Orange Is The New Black.” However, the actress received criticism for donning “blackface” to look like African American actress Uzo Aduba, prompting her to issue an apology.

"I am a huge fan of the show ‘Orange Is the New Black,’ actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize," Hough tweeted.

In other offensive costume news, only two celebrities (so far) took their costume cues from Miley Cyrus' looks at the VMAs: model/DJ Paris Hilton and Hugh Hefner's wife. Hilton donned the teddy-bear grey bodysuit version while Crystal Harris, the new wife of Playboy mogul Hef, wore a nude-colored bodysuit and twerked on her 87-year-old husband, who'd dressed as singer Robin Thicke.

Other celebrities got more original with their costume ideas, like Alexa Chung, who paired black and white stripes and a hamburger suit to be a “Hamburgler,” and model Joan Smalls, who wore a neon monster costume.
