Just days after their contentious Premier League match, Manchester United and Chelsea played a thriller at Stamford Bridge with the home side advancing to the quarterfinals, as Chelsea defeated United in overtime, 5-4.

Ryan Giggs got the scoring started in the 22nd minute as the ageless Welshman hit a shot from distance that was beyond the reach of Anders Lindegaard.

But Chelsea would even the match in the 31st minute from a penalty kick by David Luiz. Alexander Buttner tripped Victor Moses in the box for an easy whistle.

Manchester United would regain the lead in the 43rd minute off a one-on-one situation involving Javier Hernandez and Petr Cech. Anderson fed the Mexican star, who took advantage of a defensive error by the Blues, and made them pay.

The home side would even the match after halftime. Centre back Gary Cahill headed the ball in off a corner in the 52nd minute in clinical fashion.

Once again, the Red Devils would regain the lead. Seven minutes after Cahill's header, Nick Powell and Hernandez triggered an attack leading to Nani and Anderson working a one-two, and Nani finished with a stunning goal over the on-rushing Cech.

The scoring wasn't over. Scott Wootton fouled Ramires in the box in the dying moments of the match, and Eden Hazard ripped the final goal of regulation from the penalty spot to send the match to overtime. It was justice for a previous missed call. In the 72nd minute, Juan Mata's kick in the box was clearly a hand ball by Michael Keane, but the play went without a whistle.

Chelsea would finally take a lead in the match off a terrible defensive error by Wootton. Daniel Sturridge would have an easy time slotting the ball by Lindegaard.

The Danish goalkeeper was victimized again by poor defense, as Hazard took advantage of more sloppy marking by dribbling around the central defense to find wide open Ramires, who playfully scored the final Chelsea goal of the match.

United would cut the lead to one, as Giggs scored a second goal from a penalty shot following a foul on Hernadez by Cesar Azpilicueta.

The Blues had other chances. Just before the end of the first overtime, Luiz's free kick hit the crossbar. In the last play of the second overtime, Hazard's shot from distance hit the post.
