When “Criminal Minds” returns to CBS next week, Dr. Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) will take center stage on the show. A story arc on the triple Ph.D. holder will kick off in the upcoming episode and it involves his mother Diana (played by Jane Lynch).

In Season 12, episode 11, titled “Surface Tension,” Reid decides to take his mother out of a clinical study early so that he can bring her home. Although the synopsis is unclear if Diana will be living with his mother, it certainly has made fans skeptical. Will Reid take care of his mom now? Or will she stay with him for some time before moving her to a retirement home?

While Reid is busy taking care of his mother, the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) will be called to investigate a strange case. According to the episode's description, the upcoming “Criminal Minds” episode will investigate the death of a homeless man who has a bizarre hieroglyph under his armpit. Ew.

As the team proceeds with the case, they realize that they may have a serial killer in their hands. The murderer had also struck his victims in a similar manner a few years ago.

The crime series is currently on a short hiatus and will return on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 9 p.m. EST on CBS.

It is understandable that Reid wants to take his mom home after the Alzheimer-stricken character was dropped from a groundbreaking clinical study because of budget cuts. Lynch’s character will be seen in episodes 11, 13 and 20 of “Criminal Minds” Season 12.

A.J. Cook, who plays Jennifer “J.J.” Jareau in the series, recently told TVLine “We’ve got some very personal stuff happening to some very loved characters, so there will be mayhem within the fandom. But don’t worry, stick with us.”

“Criminal Minds” Season 12 airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. EST on CBS.
