‘Dance Moms’ Star Maddie Ziegler Responds To ‘SNL’ Sia ‘Chandelier’ Spoof [VIDEO]
It appears Maddie Ziegler has officially made it. The “Dance Moms” reality-TV star’s lead role in Sia’s hit music video “Chandelier” was featured on an episode of “Saturday Night Live” over the weekend. In the skit, cast member Kate McKinnon and celebrity guest star Jim Carrey donned the 12-year-old dancer’s famous “Chandelier” get-up, a shoulder-length platinum blonde wig and tan bodysuit, to perform their own rendition of the number made famous by Maddie in the video.
“I am of course dressed as the child dancer from Sia’s 'Chandelier' music video,” McKinnon said in the sketch titled “Halloween Party,” playing Karen, a business office’s reigning Halloween costume contestant winner.
When Carrey’s character Rick showed up wearing the same attire, the duo decided to settle the winner of the costume contest by performing a “Chandelier” dance-off.
“Oh no! I couldn’t possibly. I haven’t even seen the music video,” McKinnon said before immediately recreating her own version of Maddie’s signature moves from the piece. Carrey soon after followed her lead, the duo making their way through the studio while performing the number. “SNL” guest performer Iggy Azalea also joined in on the fun, the rapper ripping off her own costume mid-sketch to reveal she was also wearing Maddie’s infamous get-up.
While Maddie previously expressed a protective nature over the routine in a Season 4 episode of "Dance Moms," the young performer had nothing but positive remarks about the “SNL” spoof.
Maddie is not the only fan of the skit. Sia, 38, has also expressed her love for the number on Twitter.
“Squeeeee!!! @JimCarrey as Maddie on Saturday night live!!!!” she said Sunday.
Maddie premiered her role in Sia’s video in May. Since its release, the video has received more than 265 million views on YouTube and counting and garnered critical acclaim, winning the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards for best choreography in August. In recent months, Maddie and Sia have performed the piece for several television shows, including “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and “Dancing with the Stars.” On Friday, the duo teamed up to perform the number onstage at the 2014 We Can Survive Concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, according to a report from JustJared.
This isn’t the first time Maddie had poked fun at her avant-garde performance. In July, she appeared alongside Jimmy Kimmel and his assistant Guillermo in a skit for ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” In the segment, Maddie attempted to teach Kimmel, 46, and Guillermo the moves to the music video, a lesson which didn’t end well for the TV stars.
“I saw that [video] and I decided I should know how to dance like that," Kimmel said. “Maddie was nice enough to take time to help us fly like a bird through the night and swing by the chandelier.”
“I don’t want to say Jimmy and Guillermo are bad at dancing. … All right, I’ll just say it. They’re really bad at dancing,” Maddie said.
Maddie is currently shooting the fifth season of “Dance Moms” with her ALDC team, mother Melissa Gisoni, and coach Abby Lee Miller. The series is expected to return to Lifetime next year.
