President Tom Kirkman (Kiefer Sutherland) finally got a win in Season 1, episode 16 of ABC’s “Designated Survivor.” His presidency worked hard to pass a bill in the Senate ensuring that a background check is done on gun owners. The edge-of-your-seat voting process saw one senator, who many thought would oppose the bill, say yes.

Meanwhile, FBI Agent Hannah Wells (Maggie Q) and her new sidekick, former Assistant Director of the FBI, Jason Atwood (Malik Yoba), traveled to North Dakota to a property where Browning-Reed was still paying taxes. Shockingly, they found enough explosives in an underground tunnel to bomb not just one but three Capitols. Looks like the conspiracy really does want to take down the Statue of Liberty, the Hoover Dam and the Golden Gate Bridge.

What will happen next week on “Designated Survivor”?

Certainly more politics. The official synopsis of Season 1, episode 17 states that Kirkman is going to struggle to put together a new Supreme Court. The promo of the episode, titled “The Ninth Seat,” shows Senator Jack Bowman (Mark Deklin) using the Supreme Court issue to pick another fight with the president. Seriously, when will this guy back down?

The video shows Bowman informing the former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development that they aren’t happy with his choice for Chief Justice. Things get so dire that the justice system is held hostage due to Bowman’s rivalry with Kirkman. Of course, even a mild-mannered and polite man such as the president is going to lose his cool on the job. He is pissed towards the end of the video.

Season 1, episode 17 will also see Hannah go undercover and discover more information about the conspiracy.

Meanwhile, Press Secretary Seth Wright (Kal Penn) will battle journalist Abe Leonard (Rob Morrow) again after he returns from the Middle East with an explosive story.

“Designated Survivor” airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. EDT on ABC.
