Wearing masks during the coronavirus has been a hot topic for the Trump family. In the first debate, the family members were seen taking off their masks after sitting down.

Due to debate rules at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, all guests — including the Trump family — were required to wear masks. It was specifically announced that all audience members must wear masks throughout the event, according to officials from the Commission on Presidential Debates.

First lady Melania Trump, along with President Donald Trump's sons and daughters, were all seen adhering to the rules. When the debate concluded, Melania Trump approached Donald Trump while wearing a mask.

After the first debate in Cleveland, President Trump's campaign adviser Steve Cortes defended the family for breaking rules in declining to wear masks. "We believe in masks, but we also believe in some element of individual choice," Cortes said.

Wearing masks during the event was considered particularly important given that Donald Trump, Melania Trump and Barron Trump have all been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Both President Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden were tested for coronavirus before the debate.
