Donald Trump Supporters Boycott Pepsi, Macy’s, Dreamworks and Netflix
In a campaign to "drain the swamp" and shrink the wallets of government elites, supporters of President-elect Donald Trump urged one another Monday to boycott a variety of corporate behemoths in support of Hillary Clinton and general liberal ideals. The list posted on Reddit included PepsiCo, Macy’s, Dell, Dreamworks and Netflix, and also featured companies to support, such as several mass-market breweries and fast food restaurants, the National Rifle Association, Nascar, World Wrestling Entertainment and “cars made in America."
Some business leaders were critical of Trump before and after Election Day. PepsiCo, which owns Mountain Dew, Lipton, Lays, Ruffles and Doritos, among other popular snacks, angered some conservatives after CEO Indra Nooyi said Trump's victory had made people feel unsafe because of his stances against Muslims, immigrants and LGBT rights. Macy's dumped Trump brand merchandise last year after he called immigrants from Mexico and other countries "killers and rapists."
It’s not clear what impact the right-wing Redditors will have on these large companies, but a few smaller businesses may actually stand to benefit because of their size and the demographics of their surrounding area.
Fricano’s Pizza in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which sits right under Coors on the pro-Trump Redditors’ list of favored institutions, made headlines in late October when owner Doug Fricano posted a rant to Facebook calling Clinton “the most evil corrupt dishonest lying person on the planet [sic].” As for a leaked audio where Trump bragged about sexually assaulting women, the pizza shop owner added, “At least he was saying it to another man and not a woman.”
Grand Rapids is in the heart of right-leaning Kent County, where 147,959 voters chose Trump over 138,567 who chose Clinton. After the controversies, Fricano reported an uptick in sales.
“They’re here because they support me,” he told local broadcaster Fox 17. “They support that I said what I believe in.”
In Pennsylvania, Maple Donuts in York County featured prominent flags reading “Make America Great Again” in June, local Fox 43 reported. At least one of its stores sells a cherry-filled, white frosting-coated doughnut called “the Trump,” according to the York Daily Record. The pastry shop appears on the pro-Trump Reddit list of “Organizations to Support.” York County backed Trump over Clinton.
In Wilmington, Massachusetts, Benevento Asphalt Corp. won a spot on the Trump fans’ list after the company painting the Trump campaign logo, along with the slogan “Make America Great Again” on its trucks.
“The Benevento Companies have survived all these years because we believe in the fundamental values that are the birthright of every American,” Charles Benevento, who inherited the business from his father and grandfather, told the Wilmington Apple. “Something happened over the past several years that has steered the country away from these basic values and I believe in the message that we need to ‘Make America Great Again’ and move the country in a different direction.”
