TV host Ellen DeGeneres has shared that her wife, Portia De Rossi, was rushed to the hospital over the weekend, but due to COVID-19 regulations, she wasn’t able to stay with her and had to head home shortly after arriving.

Her wife suffered from appendicitis, which is where the outer lining of the appendix becomes blocked and inflamed, according to the Mayo Clinic. While there aren’t any specific causes as to why people suffer from this condition, it’s very painful and quick treatment, including potential surgery to remove the organ, it crucial when it occurs.

After de Rossi was admitted to the Emergency Room to get her appendix removed, DeGeneres had to wait out her wife’s fate back at home.

"That's upsetting to me. They sent me home and I'm crying," she admitted, before joking it was "because someone was chopping onions at the nurse's station," People reports.

The 63-year-old explained that everything happened quickly after de Rossi stated she wasn’t feeling well and wanted to go to bed around 7:30 p.m. DeGeneres awoke a few hours later to her wife laying on the floor.

"I look over and Portia is not in bed next to me," DeGeneres recalled. "I get out of bed and I find Portia on the floor on all fours. And I'm like, 'Baby are you okay?' And she says, 'Yeah, I'm okay.' And I said, 'Well you're okay if you're playing Twister by yourself, but you're not okay. You're on the floor.'"

She’s since gone home and recovering and DeGeneres explained that she was “feeling much better now.”

The health emergency with her wife also comes at the same time that DeGeneres is grappling with the news that her talk show has suffered from a loss of more than one million viewers since allegations were released in 2020 regarding a toxic work environment on set, the New York Times reported.

Even though views may be down, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” is still one of the top-three highest-rated talk shows out there, David McGuire, an executive vice president of programming at Telepictures stated in the article. Still, it doesn't bode well for her future either.
