Ofelia (Mercedes Mason) could potentially meet up with the others in Season 3 of “Fear the Walking Dead.” AMC/ Peter Iovino

The “Fear the Walking Dead” Season 2 finale concluded with a massive cliffhanger on Sunday night. Two of the original main characters were left with their fates up in the air, but fortunately, fans will get answers in 2017.

AMC renewed the “Walking Dead” companion series for a third season in April. That means the gory drama surrounding Madison (Kim Dickens) and her family in the zombie apocalypse will continue for at least one more season.

WARNING: STOP READING IF YOU DID NOT WATCH THE SEASON 2 FINALE.

The two-hour finale left off with Madison, Travis (Cliff Curtis) and Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) fleeing the hotel after a lot of bloodshed. Travis had killed the two Americans that Chris (Lorenzo James Henrie) left with after he found out what they did to his son. He also accidentally killed Oscar (Andres Londono), who was only trying to help Travis. The death of Oscar resulted in his brother attempting to kill Travis in the middle of the night, but Alicia stabbed him before he could pull the trigger. They took a car and fled — but Strand (Colman Domingo) did not go with them.

Madison, Travis and Alicia ultimately ended up at the Colonia where Nick (Frank Dillane) was staying, but he was no longer there. With Alejandro’s (Paul Calderon) help he was able to convince Luciana (Danay Garcia) and the others to flee the safe haven before the gang from the supermarket showed up with weapons. They spotted a helicopter and possible refuge center, however, their hope of reaching a new safe haven came crashing down when a group of people started shooting at them. The men appeared to be American and part of some sort of border patrol. Ofelia (Mercedes Mason), who went out on her own after leaving the hotel, appeared to have gotten captured by one of those men as well after she crossed the Mexican border into the U.S.

The finale set up a lot of interesting storylines for Season 3. The group started the season on the water and ended up in Mexico. It appears as if the plot will be moving back to U.S. soil — that is, if they can get past the men with machine guns. Right now it’s not clear if those men are working for the government, or just Donald Trump supporters. Fans can assume that Season 3 will address who the group is and what their motives are. It will also be interesting to see if Ofelia will be reunited with the others.

Character growth-wise, Season 3 could be a big one for Alicia. We’ve already seen her brother flourish in this new world, and she seemed to be strong in her own ways as well. However, she killed her first human, and that will certainly have an affect on her. To top it off, her mom is back to focusing on Nick. Alicia might teach her mom a lesson by going off on her own and making her mom worry about her for once.

But the big mystery heading into Season 3 surrounds Strand. He stayed behind at the hotel, which means that the series could cut back to check on him. He’s become a fan favorite on the show, so hopefully it’s not the last we’ll see of him.

“Fear the Walking Dead” Season 3 will premiere on AMC in 2017.
