Grammys 2015: Prince Mentions Black Lives Matter; Kanye West Goes On Stage During Beck’s Album Of The Year Speech
Prince introduced the Album of the Year category at the 2015 Grammy Awards. Clad in a shiny, bright orange outfit and carrying a cane, the artist took the opportunity to remind audiences of a political movement. “Albums, remember those? Albums still matter. Like books and black lives, they still matter,” Prince said.
The singer was referring to the Black Lives Matter movement that developed after the high profile deaths of young black men like Mike Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in Staten Island, New York. The movement is working toward creating “a world where black lives are no longer systematically and intentionally targeted for demise,” the organization’s website says.
Prince announced Beck’s “Morning Phase” as the winner of the Album of the Year Grammy Award, and Kanye West almost stole the spotlight. West was not nominated for Album of the Year, but his friend Beyoncé was for her self-titled album. Many audiences remember when West interrupted Taylor Swift at the 2009 Video Music Awards after Swift won over Beyoncé for Best Female Video.
However, West was just joking. He laughed and ran off the stage just as quickly as he ran up. “I need some help. Come back,” Beck laughed.
West seemed to laugh about it with his wife Kim Kardashian in the audience. Watch Beck’s acceptance and West’s almost-interruption below:
