The latest “Grey’s Anatomy” love triangle will be a tricky one, and it might even divide the fans. Unlike other triangles on the ABC drama, there isn’t one clear winning pair. Owen has been in love with both Amelia and Teddy before, and that’ll make everything even more complicated.

“There are fandoms who want to make someone a villain,” showrunner Krista Vernoff told TVLine. “But Owen (Kevin McKidd) has tremendous history with and love for both women, and when you have three beloved characters with as complex a history as these three have, there is no villain. That’s the far more interesting story. What does that mean? It’s challenging the writers, and it’s going to challenge the characters [as well as the] fans.”

The situation certainly is complicated. After Owen ran to Teddy (Kim Raver) to tell her he thought he was in love with her, Teddy was thrilled until she realized Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) told him to go to Germany. She felt he just didn’t want to be alone, and he returned to Seattle.

Owen has since been adjusting to the single life, albeit with a lot of help from Amelia. The military veteran became a foster dad to newborn Leo, but Amelia has been helping Leo’s mom, Betty (Peyton Kennedy), get sober. The two have essentially been raising Betty and Leo in their own little family. In the final episodes of Season 14, several characters pointed out to Owen and Amelia that they obviously still love each other. It seemed like they were on the path to a reunion — until Teddy showed up.

Bailey (Chandra Wilson) offered Teddy the job of Interim Chief of Surgery. Teddy happily accepted, and audiences later saw her treating a patient. She revealed to the stranger that she was pregnant. Audiences assume it’s Owen’s baby.

It’s hard to say how the characters will react to Teddy’s return, but it doesn’t sound like they’ll understand all of her reasons for coming back right away. The “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 15 premiere will pick up right where the finale left off. That means Owen has no idea Teddy is back yet, but he and Amelia seem to finally realize that they could have a future together.

“It takes a minute for that news to be slammed on Owen,” McKidd told the Hollywood Reporter. “I think he’s going to be a bit vapor-locked for a minute. He’s been yearning for a family and a child for years, and now he’s got too many kids! You have to be careful what you wish for!”

McKidd said his character hadn’t learned of Teddy’s pregnancy as of episode 2, which will air as part of the two-hour “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 15 premiere. The show returns Thursday, Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
