'GTA 5' Costs $265 Million To Develop And Market, Making It The Most Expensive Video Game Ever Produced: Report
According to The Scotsman, the upcoming video game “Grand Theft Auto 5” (“GTA 5”) is this most expensive video game ever produced, sitting at a development and marketing budget of £170 million, or $265 million.
The enormous budget for “GTA 5” dwarfs what were formerly the largest video game budgets and rivals Hollywood blockbusters.
The previous record holder for the most expensive video game produced was “Star Wars: The Old Republic,” with a budget of $200 million. In comparison, the next video games on the list of most expensive video games produced include “Grand Theft Auto 4,” “Disney Infinity” and “Red Dead Redemption,” which had a $100 million budget each.
“GTA 5’s” budget also rivals Hollywood blockbuster budgets, such as “Avatar’s” $237 million budget and Disney film “Tangled’s” $260 million budget.
“GTA 5” was developed by Rockstar North, the Edinburgh, Scotland based video game developer formerly known as DMA Design. Rockstar North was also responsible created the original “Grand Theft Auto.”
After Rockstar Games published “Grand Theft Auto 3,” they purchased DMA Design in 2002, renaming it Rockstar North.
“GTA 5” is scheduled to be released on September 17, 2013 for the Playstation 3 (PS3) and Xbox 360.
