  • "GTA V" was released in 2013
  • A new "GTA" game installment is long overdue
  • Rockstar Games reportedly has a new game engine called RAGE 9

"GTA 6" or the next "Grand Theft Auto" game installment could be one of the best-looking games of its generation, with incredible graphics courtesy of a new game engine that outperforms Unreal Engine 5.

Rockstar Advanced Game Engine, or simply RAGE, is the game engine made by the video gaming studio Rockstar Games to power its titles on various gaming platforms. It was retooled and extended over the years to offer ambient occlusion and provide improved lighting and particle system in GTAV and later further refined with the release of "Red Dead Redemption 2," supporting DirectX 12, offering physically based rendering, fog values, volumetric clouds, and Vulkan renderer in the Windows version.

Apparently, Rockstar Games retooled RAGE for "GTA 6," and according to industry insider Chris Klippel of Rockstar Magazine, the graphical output of this new game engine is "quite incredible," describing the engine as "ahead of its time." Apart from that, the insider claimed that Rockstar Games intends to design RAGE to outperform Unreal Engine 5, which is an incredible game engine that prompted many gaming studios to dump proprietary tech just to use it.

RAGE allowed video gamers to enjoy "Red Dead Redemption 2" and "GTA 5" to have a unique and immersive gaming experience and this latest claim underlines the possibility that Rockstar Games is pushing its game engine to provide graphical performance and fidelity to "GTA 6." Apparently, this new engine is called RAGE 9, which the insider claimed, has already gathered "very positive feedback."

"GTA 6" is one of the highly anticipated games and fans have long been speculating about it in the absence of official information from Rockstar Games. In 2013, "Grand Theft Auto 5" was released and a new installment in the series is long overdue.

In February, the gaming studio confirmed that a new game installment is in development but other than that, nothing was revealed about it.

"With the unprecedented longevity of GTAV, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway. We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details," Rockstar Games said in a press release.
