It’s been a long road, but Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin are finally divorced. The exes announced in 2015 that they had decided to separate. While they remain close, their divorce has taken nearly two years to complete.

According to TMZ, Paltrow filed legal documents asking a judge to declare an end to her marriage to Martin, 39, once and for all. The publication reports that while the documents appear to show the “Iron Man 3” star taking the reigns on the separation, which Martin never responded to, that is not the case. The Coldplay frontman and his former wife are said to have agreed to handle their divorce this way in the hopes of avoiding tabloid coverage. Paltrow reportedly asked the judge to enter a default judgment in the divorce while the couple’s former business manager works out an agreement regarding the separation of their property. TMZ claims the couple intends to keep the terms of that agreement under wraps.

The pair sat down to discuss child support on April 5, at which time TMZ reported that their divorce was just days from completion. Martin and Paltrow, 43, agreed to share joint custody of daughter Apple, 11, and son Moses, 9. Sources alleged that a division of property agreement had been outlined. TMZ stated that there was one final document in need of submission before the divorce would be complete.

Paltrow and Martin may not be public about the details of their divorce, but they have been outspoken about the fact that their strong bond remains even after their divorce. In February the mother of two sat down with Glamour magazine for an interview in which she said that her and her ex have a “great” relationship. She went on to say that Martin is now “like a brother” to her. Paltrow revealed that her former husband often spends the night at her home, allowing him to be their for breakfast with their children and take them to school.

“So...we’re not living together, but he’s more than welcome to be with us whenever he wants. And vice versa: I sleep in his house in Malibu a lot with the kids. We’ll have a weekend all together; holidays, we’re together,” she said.

The couple’s conscious uncoupling began in March 2014 after 11 years of marriage. Paltrow filed divorce documents in 2015, releasing a statement about the status of their relationship on her website, Goop.com. In it, she assured fans that she and Martin still love one another, but separation was the best decision for them.

“We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been,” he statement read.

Since their separation, Martin has been linked to Jennifer Lawrence and Annabelle Wallis. Paltrow has also found love again. She and director Brad Falchuck are said to have been dating for more than one year.
