Heavy floods hit millions in central China on Tuesday after unusually heavy rains.

In a video published on social media, subway passengers in Zhengzhou, Henan's capital, were left waist-deep in water that overflowed from the river banks. Passengers patiently waited for rescue in a sea of brown, misty water.

More than 10,000 residents of Henan province were moved to shelters, the official Xinhua News Agency stated.

Some people were spending the night in their workplaces or checked into hotels.

As of yet, there are no words on possible deaths of injuries.

On Tuesday, weather authorities issued the highest warning level for the province and Chinese weather forecasts expected further severe downpours. More than 7.8in of rain fell in one hour, according to The Guardian.

China typically experiences floods during its rainy summer seasons. Over the past few decades, these floods have worsened due to China’s urbanisation and the global climate crisis.

In a statement published on the Zhengzhou local government's website, the city warned that the "flood control situation is grim” and the risk of disaster is "extremely high."

Officials warned residents to stay home or in a safe place and to remain alert for updates, the government said in a separate statement.
