“Hit The Floor” might be a show about basketball and dance, but love and sex are just as much a part of the show. It seems like Derek (McKinley Freeman) might be getting in on those last two.

The basketball player, who the Season 4 premiere revealed got divorced from Ahsha (Taylour Paige), is still in a rough place post-breakup, but as the season progresses, Derek starts to recover in both his love life and his career.

“I think it’s a hero’s journey at the end of the day,” Freeman told International Business Times about where Derek is now. “It’s about walking through life, trying to figure out what to make sense of. We sometimes get so overwhelmed with so much stuff, it feels like you literally have to take it one day at a time. And I think with Derek this season, a lot of it is going to be about how, with everything going, how are you gonna handle the things that only come up in Devils arena and all these other things?”

It was first teased that something might happen between Derek and Devil Girls newcomers London (Teyana Taylor) and Jamie (Kyndall Ferguson) when a promo photo was released before the season began, showing him sandwiched between the two of them. The idea that he might get the chance to choose between the two of them came up in last week’s “Hit The Floor” episode, with Derek getting a unique scene with each woman.

During his house party, Derek walked in on Jamie changing in his bedroom, with her flirting with him the whole time and flaunting her body in front of him. A few minutes later, he’s alone outside with London, with the two of them sharing a deep conversation and connecting over trying to again prove themselves as veterans in their industries. The two very different scenes, Jamie’s being more physical and London’s being more meaningful, could be foreshadowing what’s to come.

“I think that those types of things are done on purpose,” Freeman told IBT about the scenes.

While the actor was staying fairly tight-lipped about Derek’s possible Season 4 romances, he said that “the audience gets to learn more about London and Jamie, and in the context of how their lives overlap with Devils Arena and how that overlaps with Derek’s and everyone else.” Plus, he mentioned that “the ability to just connect with someone on a level that not very many people can understand” is the basis of “any friendship,” which is essentially what his scene with London showed.

Fans might learn what’s to come of Derek, Jamie and London sooner than they thought, though. With creator James LaRosa revealing on Twitter that “every single #HitTheFloor man will be shirtless” and that “they’re literally all gettin’ some” in Tuesday’s episode, except for only two characters, we could see Derek officially moving on from Ahsha with someone new. Will he be acting on Jamie’s obvious advances, or will he go with London because of their more-than-surface-level connection?
