Inside #OpTrollTheNSA: How 'Trolling The NSA' Will Go Down

"Operation Troll The NSA" is aimed at jamming the recently revealed Prism surveillance system, phone records collection and other secret government data-mining endeavors in a coordinated act of protest.

The idea behind the effort is for as many people as possible to call or email a script filled with so-called "keywords of terror" in an attempt to overwhelm the spy agencies tasked with intercepting electronic communications in the pursuit of suspected "terrorists," criminals and other bad actors.

The script, which on its own is a darkly hilarious satire of the state of the anti-terror apparatus and its excesses, includes a wide range of terms, phrases and ideas that would likely set off red flags if they were to be monitored by government agents, all written in bold text in order to ensure there is no mistaking them. Here's a short excerpt:

“I just read this article about how these free radical particles can cause the downfall of good health and accelerate aging. These could actually cause death to millions of Americans. If these particles are flying around undetected everywhere, does that mean we’re all radicalized?”

On Wednesday, the creators of OpTrollTheNSA -- namely Buzzfeed creative directors Chris Baker and Mike Lacher -- want to “jam up the NSA’s scanners” by having “millions” all email the script to one another, or call one another and read it out loud.

The aim is to “give our nation’s impressive surveillance apparatus the kind of test it deserves.” After all, “they say they don’t read or listen to the contents of our messages,” so if that’s true, Baker and Lacher seem to suggest, then they wouldn’t even notice the massive increase in such problematic text.

So at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, participants in the movement organized on Twitter and other social media under the #OpTrollTheNSA hashtag, will do just that, as per the plan.

As the Operation Troll The NSA site says, “Why not test it out? It’ll be fun.”
