Characters from the iPhone X's Animoji feature. Apple

After the iPhone X’s release on Friday, it didn’t take long for users to start using the Animoji feature.

Apple revealed Animoji, the customized animated emoji feature, during its September event. Users can pick from dozens of Animoji to express their emotions on iMessage through the iPhone X’s TrueDepth camera, which is also used for the Face ID.

How Animoji Works

Users can access the feature by going in the Messages app under the App section and tapping on the Animoji app. When the app opens up, the left side of the screen displays 12 characters: robot, cat, fox, monkey, puppy, alien, unicorn, poop, pig, panda, bunny and chicken. Users can tap on the character they want to use for their message. The Animoji app screen can be enlarged for better viewing by tapping the arrow under the text field.

After picking the character, users can position the camera in front of them so the iPhone reads their face for the message recording. Recording begins when the device owners tap the red button and can record up to 10 seconds. After the user has finished, the iPhone will replay the message, which can be sent to a contact or discarded. If users want to change the character after the recording they can do so.

Users can also create their own Animoji stickers and save their messages.

While some people mocked the feature when it was first revealed, it was a different story when iPhone X owners started using Animoji. After the release of the smartphone in stores, users were quick to share their Animoji messages on social media. People also started using the feature to lip sync their favorite songs, dubbed “Anomoji karaoke.”
