  • Jill Biden said she didn't ask Kate Middleton for advice on meeting Queen Elizabeth II during their joint engagement
  • Biden said their discussion focused on education
  • Queen Elizabeth will host President Joe Biden and the first lady at Windsor Castle for tea on Sunday

Dr. Jill Biden had a surprise joint engagement with Kate Middleton in the U.K. Friday, but her scheduled meeting with Queen Elizabeth II was not among the topics she discussed with the Duchess of Cambridge.

The first lady and Duchess Kate met for the first time during a joint visit to Connor Downs Academy preschool in the Hayle neighborhood of Cornwall, England, where world leaders arrived this week for the G7 Summit. When asked by reporters if she sought Middleton's advice ahead of Sunday tea with the monarch, Biden brushed off the question.

"No, I didn't. We've been busy. Were you not in that room? We were talking education," Biden was quoted by People as saying.

During their visit to the Cornwall school, Middleton and Biden met the 4- and-5-year-old students and teachers and later participated in a roundtable discussion on the importance of early childhood education. They also fed the school rabbits some snacks and had a private chat as they toured the academy.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden and the first lady met Queen Elizabeth II and the rest of the royal family Friday at the G7 leaders’ reception at The Eden Project in Cornwall hosted by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Prince Charles, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were also present during the gathering, Entertainment Tonight reported.

This made Biden the 13th U.S. president to meet Queen Elizabeth II. According to the White House, the president previously met the monarch in 1982, but he was a senator at the time, Associated Press reported.

The royal family shared photos taken from the G7 Summit on Instagram. One of the pictures featured the Queen laughing with the Bidens, with Prince Charles and Camilla beside her talking to the other delegates.

"As Head of State, Her Majesty The Queen regularly speaks to world leaders and members of the diplomatic community as part of the vital role she plays as a figurehead for the UK and Commonwealth," the caption read.

Social media users were happy to see the Queen at the event and noted her interactions with the Bidens.

"Her Majesty the Queen looks amazing and I am glad that she has a vital role in this G7 meeting. She is an amazing person and head of state," one commented.

"Lovely to see a smiley Queen enjoying a chat with President Biden and the First Lady," a second user wrote.

"She seemed to be delighted with Mr and Mrs Biden...." a third user added.

President Biden and the first lady will meet Queen Elizabeth again Sunday when the monarch will welcome them to Windsor Castle for tea. The president's press secretary, Jen Psaki, previously confirmed their scheduled meeting, USA Today reported.

"Who among us wouldn't want to meet the queen? … They issued, of course, a graceful invitation, which he [Biden] certainly accepted. He's looking forward to seeing her with Dr. Biden as well," Psaki told reporters earlier this month.
