KEY POINTS

  • Jill Biden was asked about her now-famous scrunchie during her interview with Kelly Clarkson
  • The first lady said it was her daughter, Ashley, who told her about the scrunchie craze she started
  • The scrunchie she wore while picking up Valentine's Day sweets at a Capitol Hill bakery went viral this month

Jill Biden addressed the hype around her viral scrunchie during her recent chat with Kelly Clarkson.

In her first solo broadcast interview since becoming first lady, Biden opened up about her life in the White House on "The Kelly Clarkson Show." One of the topics that came up was the online craze sparked by the scrunchie Biden was wearing in the photo of her visiting a Capitol Hill bakery called The Sweet Lobby to "pick up some treats" for Valentine's Day.

According to Biden, however, she has no idea why her scrunchie became a trending topic on social media.

"I noticed you wore a scrunchie and everybody lost their mind. I think we all wear scrunchies. Are you usually this much of a fashionista with your scrunchies?" Clarkson asked the first lady.

"You know, my daughter [Ashley] called me right after I left that shop and said, 'Mom, everyone's talking about this scrunchie.' I said, 'What scrunchie?' I didn't know what she was talking about. I still don't understand it," Biden told the host.

Clarkson then suggested, "Well, I'm just saying, if you're gonna start bringing back scrunchies, throw in the banana clips as well."

In Biden's photo, which has received over 160,000 likes on Twitter, she is wearing a light-pink coat, $168 flower-shaped earrings by Lele Sadoughi, a black mask, and of course, her now-famous scrunchie.

During the interview, the FLOTUS also shared how she spends quality time with her husband, President Joe Biden, amid their busy schedules.

"He's so busy, I'm so busy, but we do keep dinner. And we have dinner together, no phones, the phones have to be off…We just sit and talk for awhile, and he has to go back to work into the night and I'm grading papers," she shared.

They also have regular Sunday night dinners with their children, according to Biden. The first couple shares daughter Ashley, 39. The president is also a father to Hunter, 51, and late Beau and Naomi.

Biden said her granddaughters love the way she sets up the table, which includes candles and flowers. The kids told her they would also do their own dinners "Nana style."
