  • Tendler said she was "heartbroken" that Mulaney decided to end their marriage

John Mulaney and his wife Anna Marie Tendler are divorcing after six years of marriage and months after he checked into rehab for alcohol and cocaine addiction.

A spokesperson for Mulaney confirmed their split to Page Six. The spokesperson did not reveal any additional details regarding the breakup, including why the comedian and the artist decided to part ways.

"John will not have any further comment as he continues to focus on his recovery and getting back to work," Mulaney's rep said.

Tendler, through a spokesperson, said that Mulaney was the one who initiated the split. Unnamed sources told Page Six that the "Saturday Night Live" writer asked for a divorce "three months ago."

"I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage," Tendler said in a statement to People. "I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery."

The split announcement comes nearly five months after Mulaney checked into a rehab facility in Pennsylvania in December after relapsing in his decades-long battle with addiction. In February, Mulaney's spokesperson said the comedian completed a 60-day rehab stay and was continuing his sobriety work as an outpatient.

"John has completed 60 days in rehab, and now he’s in outpatient sober care. He is doing well, although he is still not ready to return to work," an unnamed source told Page Six at the time.

People close to Mulaney were happy after he decided to check into rehab because they knew that he already needed help for his sobriety struggles, Page Six reported in December. According to an unnamed insider who spoke with the outlet, he struggled again during the lockdown.

"John’s friends and family are happy that he’s finally getting some help and focusing on his health," the source said. "His fans know he’s struggled in the past with sobriety, he has talked about it openly. Unfortunately, he has struggled again during the pandemic. He’s on board with his recovery, he’s not fighting against rehab."

Mulaney and Tendler, who is a master’s candidate in NYU’s Costume Studies program, met during a group trip to Martha's Vineyard in the late 2000s. They were not dating at the time, but Tendler knew they would soon be going out after that, according to Insider.

In February 2010, Tendler wrote a sign that read, "John is the man I am going to marry" and dated it with her signature. The "Big Mouth" star shared a photo of it in 2018 when they celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary.

"Happy 4th Anniversary @amtendler. And happy 8 year and 5 month anniversary to when you predicted it. Every time I see you it feels like when Leo saw Claire Danes through the aquarium," he wrote on Instagram.
