Johnny Depp found himself in hot water Thursday after he joked about President Donald Trump's assassination. The "Pirates of the Caribbean" star made the remarks at the Glastonbury Festival in Somerset, England.

"Can we bring Trump here? … I think he needs help," Depp asked the audience, later moving on to slamming the president. "I think he needs help. ... This is going to be in the press, and it'll be horrible. But I like that you're all a part of it. When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?" he continued to say, citing the reference of John Wilkes Booth assassinating former President Abraham Lincoln in 1865.

“I want to clarify, I am not an actor. I lie for a living,” Depp said adding, “However, it has been a while and maybe it is time.”

Depp was widely criticized on social media for his controversial remark, with many users calling him a "woman beater," over the alleged domestic abuse claims made by his ex-wife Amber Heard.

"#JohnnyDepp - Talks about assassinating President Trump. #FBI - When will these Hollywood punks be held accountable? When?," one user wrote, while another said: "Johnny Depp back on Heroin folks! When he's not hitting girls or getting high he's provoking harm to our President!"

Depp's remarks come barely a week after the politically-motivated shooting of Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise. The politician underwent several surgeries after being shot by James Hodgkinson, 66. Several reports claimed the shooting may have been a deliberate, premeditated act of political violence towards the Republicans.

Meanwhile, Depp is not the only star who faced criticism for hinting at an alleged killing of Trump in the recent weeks. Comedian Kathy Griffin too had sparked a controversy after a photo of her holding a bloodied Trump mask made its way online. After much criticism, Griffin released an apology video, where she acknowledged that she made a mistake in posting the picture. Despite the apology, CNN decided to cut ties with the comedian and fired her as the host of their upcoming New Year’s Eve program.

While many criticized Griffin for the photograph, a handful of celebrities stood by her and expressed their support for the comedian. Alec Baldwin, who often impersonates the 71-year-old president on “Saturday Night Live,” said last month: "Dear Kathy Griffin, Kathy... baby... I've been there. The whole Henry Hyde thing [with] Conan, where we bring out an oxygen mask at the end? a joke. That's what I thought. That's what we intended. No one walked out of the studio and said, "No! We're serious!" No one."

Actor Jamie Foxx too supported Griffin, saying sometimes comedians tend to “go beyond, past the line.”

"Listen, as comedians, sometimes you do go beyond, past the line," Foxx told Entertainment Tonight (ET). "I still love Kathy Griffin. She went past the line, she'll pay for it in the way she pays for it, and we'll go out and we'll laugh with her again," Fox added.

Actor and comedian Jim Carrey also told ET : "I think it is the job of a comedian to cross the line at all times — because that line is not real."

"If you step out into that spotlight and you're doing the crazy things that [Trump is] doing, we're the last line of defense. And really, the comedians are the last voice of truth in this whole thing. It's impossible to get away from it," Carrey added.
