Kentucky Derby Betting Odds 2016: With 4 Days Remaining Are Nyquist, Mohaymen Still Favorites?

A year after American Pharoah became the first horse in 37 years to win the Triple Crown, one competitor in the 2016 Kentucky Derby stands out as the most likely candidate to pull off the same feat. Nyquist remains the clear favorite to win at Churchill Downs just four days before the race.

As the biggest race of the year gets closer, Nyquist’s betting odds continue to get better. He’s a 3/1 favorite at William Hill Sports Book in Las Vegas, putting him well ahead of most of the field.

Nyquist’s resume makes it easy to choose him as the projected winner of the 142nd Kentucky Derby. Winning the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, the three-year-old still has yet to lose a race, going 7-0. Most recently, Nyquist won the Florida Derby on April 2, grabbing a three and one-quarter length victory.

Mohaymen was no match for Nyquist in Florida, but he’s widely considered to have the best chance of stopping Nyquist at the Kentucky Derby. Mohaymen has 4/1 odds with the first leg of the Triple Crown fast approaching.

If it was Mohaymen that won the Florida Derby, the horse would likely be the favorite on Saturday. But the colt finished in fourth place, and many experts believe Nyquist has the edge. Mohaymen came up short in Florida, despite being the odds-on favorite.

“No. 1, I think we were on the worst part of the track,” trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said, via Daily Racing Form. “No. 2, we traveled 54 feet farther [than Nyquist] on the worst part of the track. No one was going to win from out there.”

Exaggerator and Brody’s Cause are the only other horses that have better than 10/1 odds to win the one and one-quarter mile race. Destin and Mor Spirit have 10/1 odds.

Collected and Fellowship are the biggest longshots with 60/1 odds. Cherry Wine, Adventist, Laoban and Dazzling Gem have 50/1 odds.

William Hill puts the odds of a horse winning the Triple Crown at +750. There are -1200 odds that no one horse will win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.
