Millions of coffee lovers could be forced to forgo their beloved Keurig Green Mountain with Monday's recall of 7.2 million coffeemakers. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said millions of the MINI Plus Brewing Systems were recalled in the U.S. because of dozens of reports of burns.

The machine could spray the overheated liquid on customers. The error could occur after it is used to brew more than two cups of coffee in a row. “Hot liquid could escape from certain MINI Plus Brewing System units during use,” the the manufacturer wrote in a press release. “Keurig has determined that this event is more likely to occur if the brewer is used to brew more than two cups in quick succession.”

Owners who have models with the number K10 and an identification number that starts with 31 are part of the recall. The coffeemakers were sold from December 2009 through July 2014 for about $100. They were released in 13 colors and have silver trim. Free repairs are being offered by Keurig.

There were 6.6 million units recalled in the U.S. and 564,000 in Canada. To contact Keurig, email the company at keurig@inmar.com or call (844) 255-7886 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST, and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the exceptions of Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Until potentially defective machines are fixed, users can use their coffeemakers, but, “we recommend you avoid brewing more than two cups in rapid succession and maintain an arm’s length distance from the brewer during the brewing process,” Keurig said. If anyone has one of these coffeemakers under their Christmas tree, purchasers are instructed to notify the recipient.

Keurig’s shares dropped to $136.23, about 2.3 percent, on the news, Reuters reported. "We believe the earnings impact specifically from the recall is unlikely to be material but that it could hurt brand perception, negatively impacting future brewer sales," said Mark Astrachan, an analyst at Stifel, Nicolaus & Co.

“First cup. Fourth cup -- with Keurig, it's always a fresh cup,” the Keurig says on its website. “The MINI Plus Brewing System brews a perfect cup of coffee, tea, hot cocoa or iced beverage in under 2 minutes at the touch of a button.”
