Kurt Cobain, the 90s rockstar and creator of Nirvana, would have turned 54 on Saturday. The singer died on April 5, 1994, at the age of 27 from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The singer paved the way for many grunge artists and had a huge following base that still is present today. Some of his hit songs include “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” ‘Come as You Are,” “Heart-Shaped Box” and “In Bloom.”

While he struggled with drug addiction, he still found love in his wife, Courtney Love, and his daughter, Frances Bean Cobain.

He was also an advocate for those who were discriminated against and wanted everyone to live their best lives, which is what his most famous quotes (via Goal Cast and Good Reads) surround.

  1. “May women rule the world.”
  2. “If any of you in any way hate homosexuals, people of a different color, or women, please do us this one favor for us...don’t come to our shows and don’t buy our records.”
  3. “Wanting to be someone else is a waste of who you are.”
  4. “Drugs are a waste of time. They destroy your memory and your self-respect and everything that goes along with your self esteem.”
  5. “If you die you’re completely happy and your soul somewhere lives on. I’m not afraid of dying. Total peace after death, becoming someone else is the best hope I’ve got.”
  6. “No one is afraid of heights, they’re afraid of falling down. No one is afraid of saying I love you, they’re afraid of the answer.”
  7. “Thank you for the tragedy. I need it for my art.”
  8. “To be positive at all times is to ignore all that is important, sacred and valuable. To be negative at all times is to be threatened by ridiculousness and instant discreditably.”
  9. “We have no right to express an opinion until we know all of the answers.”
  10. There are a lot of things I wish I would have done, instead of just sitting around and complaining about having a boring life.
