The LG V30 was previously rumored to arrive with an f/1.6 aperture lens for its main, rear-facing cameras. Now, LG Electronics has confirmed this rumor about its upcoming flagship smartphone, which is expected to be announced on Aug. 31.

The LG V30 back camera will indeed be equipped with an f/1.6 aperture lens, LG confirmed today in a press release. Not only is this the first LG smartphone to feature an f/1.6 lens, but it’s also the largest aperture on any existing smartphone camera.

For the uninitiated, aperture is the opening inside a camera lens where light is able to enter. The lower the number, the larger the aperture. With an f/1.6 aperture, the lens on the LG V30 camera will be able to capture more light, making it possible to produce better quality images even in low lighting conditions. LG says that the f/1.6 lens on the V30 will allow the camera to capture 25 percent more light compared to the V20's f/1.8 lens.

“LG boasts an unrivaled heritage in smartphone photography and our decision to adopt glass in the V30 camera is specifically because this has traditionally been the realm of DSLRs,” LG Electronics Mobile President Juno Cho said. “For the users for whom the V series was designed, this kind of innovation is significant.”

LG also said that the V30’s cameras will not only be better than the ones found on the V20, but also other smartphones. The company noted that the V30's camera will cut down the edge distortion by a third compared to the V20 when shooting with the wide angle lens. This means that images will be more accurate, making the camera module ideal for taking group shots or landscapes.

LG also pointed out that even though it was able to improve the camera on the LG V30, the camera module on the back will still be elegant. The phone maker said that the camera module on the V30 is actually 30 percent smaller than the V20.

Other LG V30 camera features mentioned by LG include laser autofocus, optical images stabilization and electronic image stabilization. LG appears to be marketing the V30 heavily on photography enthusiasts and users who may simply want a superior camera experience.

IBT reported last week that the LG V30 will focus more on video and multimedia features. Back then, Android Authority also claimed that it would feature an f/1.6 aperture camera lens. Now that the camera lens has been confirmed by LG, it seems likely that previous rumors might actually turn out to be true.

The LG V30 will be revealed on Aug. 31, just a day before IFA Berlin 2017 kicks off. The phone maker has already sent out invites teasing the V30’s camera capabilities.
