For those in New York City craving a macaron, today is your day. March 20 marks the fifth annual Macaron Day in New York City, a day where macaron fans can get free macarons from several participating bakeries across the city.

To receive a free macaron, the French cookie made from almond flour, sugar and egg whites, all you have to do is tell participating shops that you’re there for Macaron Day NYC. However, free macarons are limited to one per customer at participating locations.

Macaron Day NYC began in 2010 by François Payard, chef and owner of François Payard Bakery and FP Patisserie in Manhattan, NY. The day was inspired by and falls on the same day every year as the older Jour du Macaron (Macaron Day) in France, which was started by la Maison Pierre Hermé in conjunction with Relais Desserts.

In addition to distributing free macarons to customers, many of the bakeries participating in Macaron Day NYC are donating a portion of macaron proceeds to City Harvest, a food rescue organization that collects excess food from various vendors and distributes them to community food programs in New York City.
