Man shot a 10-year-old girl in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday after she asked him if the gun he was carrying was a toy.

The incident took place when the girl’s parents were working in their farm while the victim and her brother were in a ground nearby, Tuesday evening. Vidya Ram, the accused, was roaming near the ground where the children were playing. He was carrying a single barrel gun. When the girl asked him if the gun he was carrying was real or fake, he aimed and shot her in hand and stomach.

“When my daughter asked him whether the gun he was carrying was toy, Vidya Ram took an aim at her and pressed the trigger. My daughter received bullet injuries and fell down. Before I could reach the spot, he escaped,” the girl’s father, Ajay Pal Maurya, said, local daily the Times Of India reported.

He then rushed her to a nearby hospital where she is currently undergoing treatment.

“The doctor told me that my daughter is safe and is being treated for her injuries in her right hand and stomach,” Maurya said.

Brijendra Singh, station house officer, Kurh Fatehgarh village, said the police immediately started a search operation to find the accused after the girl’s father filed a complaint. They then found the man at a salon with the help of a tip and took him into custody. They also seized his gun.

“We received an information that Ram had come to a barber shop at Khataita tri-junction area. As soon as we reached there, we caught Ram and seized his gun. An FIR has been registered against him under section 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC,” Singh said.

In a similar incident in September 2018, a man was arrested after he accidentally shot his girlfriend's five-year-old daughter in Miami, Florida.

Jonathan Craig, who lived with his girlfriend and her three children in an apartment complex, took out his gun after he noticed an armed man walking outside. One of the children asked him to leave the room as the child was disturbed with him fiddling his handgun. He then took the gun into his girlfriend's bedroom while the children fell asleep on the sofa in the living room. They were awoken by the sound of a gunshot. The girlfriend noticed that one of the children had been shot in the back and that her boyfriend was standing over her siblings saying "Oh no, damn damn," NBC Miami reported.
