“The Mayor” star Yvette Nicole Brown said that her great off-screen relationship with her co-star Brandon Micheal Hall has helped them a lot in portraying their mother-son moments on the ABC comedy.

“Anyone can act like ‘He’s my son,’ but there’s an undercurrent of love and respect between us that we can lean on when we’re filming,” Brown told TV Insider when asked what it’s like working with Hall.

Brown, who plays Courtney’s (Hall) mom Dina, revealed that she and Hall became closer to one another last summer. “We bonded when we went down to the Essence Festival in New Orleans over the summer and really got to spend time together,” the 46-year-old actress said.

Hall also had nothing but good words for Brown. “I just wanna stay working with her for the rest of my life,” Hall said of Brown in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar last month. “I say this in all honor of my real mom, but Yvette is my on- and off-screen mom. And she is that for both me, Marcel [Spears], and Bernard [David Jones] [who play Courtney's friends, T.K. and Jermaine], and also for the set. Yvette has this maternal truth about her, where when she looks at you, you feel like you can just tell her everything. And it shows onscreen.”

During a chat with GQ Magazine last month, Hall shared an interesting tidbit that would prove that Brown is indeed an off-screen mom to him. “If it wasn't for Yvette Nicole, I would still probably not have my refrigerator right now,” the “Search Party” star shared. “She was the one who’s like, ‘Brandon, you need to get a refrigerator in your house. Brandon, what are you doing? Do this.’ Yvette has been the cheerleader in my corner. I can call Yvette any time of day or night and ask for any information. Or just to talk when things are just getting a little bit too much.”
